James R. Hurford Prize
The Hurford Prize was created in 2008 to commemorate the
fundamental contributions made to the modern study of language evolution
by Professor James R. Hurford, who has constantly worked to build
bridges between linguistics, biology, psychology and the many other
fields contributing to our understanding of the biological evolution
of the human capacity for language. The prize is awarded to the
best student presentation.
The winners of the 1st James R. Hurford Prize are Olga
Feher for her presentation "Evolution
of song culture in the zebra finch", O. Feher, P. P. Mitra,
K. Sasahara & O. Tchernichovski. and Thomas C. Scott-Phillips
for his presentation "Signalling
signalhood and the emergence of communication", T. C. Scott-Phillips,
S. Kirby & G. Ritchie.
The prize is sponsored by Oxford University Press.
